Perspectives for Fishmeal and Fish Oil

On August 29-30, 2016, 100 participants, including State Secretary Ronny Berg from Norway, took part in the Symposium " Perspectives for Fish Meal and Fish Oil in light of the management of forage fisheries, alternative uses of fishmeal and the development of new feeds and technologies". The Symposium took place at the North Sea Centre, Hirtshals, Denmark.

The purpose of the Symposium was to bring stakeholders together for an informed discussion of trends, challenges and opportunities for the fish meal and fish oil value chain. The value chain has changed substantially over the past decades due to changing policy environments with respect to fisheries management, regulatory framework, food security, technological developments and changing stakeholder views. Against this background the Nordic Marine Think Tank and the EUfishmeal Organisation organised the Symposium with funding support from the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The Programme for the Symposium was organized in three sessions:

1. Biological Challenges of Forage Fisheries

2. Forage Fisheries, Food Security and Other Societal Concerns

3. Fishmeal and Fish Oil Value Chain Perspectives

Each session was concluded with a roundtable among presenters and followed up by questions/answers with the Symposium participants. The Symposium was concluded with a Roundtable Panel discussion.
